Lots of news and so little time! (Thoughts on Kirby Air Riders Direct and Gamescom Opening Night Live presentations)

Image
Of course, I ended my last post by saying that I'll probably not be able to write as frequently as I'm going back to school this week, but we did get two presentations yesterday (August 19), so I'll do my best to talk about them! We're still just barely out of the summer season down here, so in a way, this was kind of like a continuation of Summer Game Fest, even though that event was back in June. Time is truly a wild and wacky construct, isn't it? Geoff Keighley was back hosting Gamescom Opening Night Live from Cologne yesterday afternoon (as I was getting out of my first class), but first, we had a 45 minute presentation from Masahiro Sakurai about Kirby Air Riders . Since that's the one I was able to watch all of, I'll talk about that first. A Packed Day!     Kirby Air Riders was briefly teased back in April during the Switch 2 reveal stream, the same stream that showed off Mario Kart World , Donkey Kong Bananza , and a few other titles, but it on...

So many games... (Thoughts on UFO 50)

Hey friends, we got a Indie World Showcase last week and with it came two announcements that I've been looking forward to for a long time. The first one was an announcement for the release date of Mina the Hollower , the new game from Yacht Club Games, which is coming out on Halloween, They also put out a demo for the game which was really good, and makes me excited for it all over again. The other announcement that I've really wanted for a while was the announcement and shadowdrop of UFO 50 , a game that took the internet by storm when it came out last Fall. I've only been playing it for a few days, and honestly I don't have any deep thoughts yet, because I haven't even played all 50 of the games yet, but I thought I should get some early thoughts out while I'm still going through and playing them all. I hope you're excited for some 8 and 16-bit era fun, because that's what I'll be talking about today. What's In A Game?     The first thing...

Monkeying around has never been more fun! (Donkey Kong Bananza in review)

When I was a kid, I got Donkey Kong 64 along with my Nintendo 64, even though I picked it up a long time after they were off the market. It was the Nintendo Wii's time and I saw the older console with the Expansion Pak in it, which is what you needed to play this one massive game. I loved that game, though I never got even close to the end of it. Why am I talking about Donkey Kong 64 ? It was the one and only fully 3D adventure game for the ape for over 25 years. It came out in 1999, so it's been a while. There hasn't been any type of Donkey Kong focused game to come out since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2012, so I was really excited for this new adventure with everyone's favorite tie-wearing gorilla, Donkey Kong. There are many reasons for DK to get less love from Nintendo, for one thing, the rights are all weird with Rare, the creators of the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES, as well as the aforementioned DK64. Rare was purchased by Microsoft ...

A Worthy Successor? (Switch 2 Review)

Image
Hey friends, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a Nintendo Switch 2 really early on, and now that the console has been out about a month, I'm excited to share a little bit about how the console feels, and my impressions on the one Switch 2 game that I've been able to play so far, Mario Kart World . It has felt like a long wait, even though the system has only really been known about since February, but I'm glad that we're finally here and I hope that the games that are coming soon will be nice! The New (Old) Console!     The interesting thing about the Switch 2 is that this is the first console that I can remember Nintendo making where they didn't come up with a brand new concept. The NES to the SNES, they added a new controller with many new buttons, from there, we have the Nintendo 64, again with a bold and weird new controller that worked with 3D games while looking like a pitchfork. With the Gamecube, Nintendo finally switched from cartridges to...

Back to game news! (Thoughts on Summer announcements!)

Hey friends! Long time no talk, I hope you're all doing alright! I told you a while ago that June was really packed this year, and so I missed a lot of news. Today I'm going to work on catching up with some of it here! I may just talk a bit about a few different things and then keep going for a few weeks as I do more research on exactly what I missed, because I'm sure there was a lot. I'll begin with the bits and pieces that I have seen and been told about by some friends who were able to catch announcements as they were happening! Summer Game Fest is still a thing, whether you watch or not!     The first week of June, I took a trip up to New York, so I was very grateful for my friend texting me every now and then about different game announcements that I may be interested in. The biggest one was definitely Resident Evil 9: Requiem . You play as Grace Ashcroft, a technical analyst for the FBI. It's very unclear what this game is going to be like based on the first ...

June has been full of adventures! (Quick personal update!)

Hey there, friends. It has been a few weeks since I've written anything, and I'm sorry about that. I've been really busy, and I would like to share a little bit about all that I've been up to for the past month. I'm not going to say that I haven't been really busy at other times in my life, but I'm having a hard time remembering a month that has been quite as packed as this one! I hope you'll join me as I unpack my work and play times, beginning with a little trip up to the big apple. I'm a little tired!     June started with a bang as we boarded a plane with our group of 34 folks (24 students and 10 chaperones) and flew up to New York. While there, we learned a bit about our nation's history as we visited a few historical churches. St. Paul's, which was a church that George Washington attended many times and then much later, was used to house the first responders as they worked to clean up the situation after 9/11. Plymouth Church in ...

Just Breathe.

I was driving home the other day after doing something, listening to the Broadway channel on Sirius XM when I heard a song that I recognized, but I couldn't remember where at first. The song was "Breathe" from the musical,  In The Heights, by Lin Manuel-Miranda. If you can't remember it, or if you're not familiar with the show, I'll give you a bit of background about this song as well as one character in particular. We are told that Nina has just returned from college for break, and is spoken of very highly by everyone else in the show. Before she shows up, we meet her proud parents (or father, if you're watching the movie which removed her mother from the equation), and everyone is excited to see her. It's a really interesting way to introduce her to us, as the audience, first hearing about her before we actually see her appear, since she's one of the few major characters that doesn't appear in the opening number of the show.      Nina is...
