Becoming A Character in The Story

Image
A young vampire slayer once said, "The hardest thing about this world is to live in it it. Be brave. Live." I'm not going to claim that I'm the biggest "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fan out there, but I will say this is a line that has stuck with me and many others. A few weeks ago, I discussed Seussical the Musical , and specifically talked about my interest in The Cat in the Hat as a character, as well as The Narrator from Into the Woods . What do these two characters have in common though? It's not too hard to figure out, since one of the two is literally called "The Narrator," but they narrate the story. They exist out of the confines of the show, and jump in whenever a character is needed for plot development or to explain what a character is feeling, but (for the most part) they don't have a part to play.       I think part of why I'm so fascinated by these characters, and even wrote a story where the main character discovers a p

Nintendo Direct time again! (June 18, 2024)

It's official! We're getting another Nintendo Direct tomorrow morning, as was reported a few weeks ago by Furukawa, the current President and CEO of Nintendo. We didn't know anything about the date until this morning (June 17), so before this, I'm going to do a bit of speculation on what we can see in the showcase tomorrow. For starters, it's going to be a tricky one, we know that the successor to the Switch is being announced in this fiscal year, but there's reportedly going to be nothing about that in the presentation tomorrow. The presentation is going to be 40 minutes long, so we will have 40 minutes of Switch game footage, which apparently they'll have, but who knows what it will be! As always, it would be amazing to get a remaster of Kid Icarus Uprising or a new Kirby game, we could get Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD , but if nothing else, we will almost certainly get some final information about Luigi's Mansion 2 HD , which is slate

More gaming news from Summer Game Fest 2024!

Summertime has always been one of the best times to be a fan of video games. For over 20 years, E3 was treated as something like a second Christmas for us who tuned in every year to see what would be announced. Of course, there weren't presents, besides the ones that we would buy eventually once they came out, but it just always felt so good to know what was coming down the pipeline for some of our favorite developers. This is the first year since the official death of E3 after several years of warning signs, leaving Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest to become the one show of the summer to unite the fans of different companies. Of course, the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony) all have their own shows to tend to now, while Keighley is in charge of some announcements that may not have the same attachments to the console makers as their own first party studios. We got some cool things on Friday during their kick-off event, and we got a few more cool things from Xbox'

What is Sony up to? (Thoughts on the May 30 Sony State of Play)

Image
During the Summer months, there is always a lot of gaming news, and I'm out of town this week. I'll try to get right to it with a relatively short update of the things that I cared about with the Sony State of Play from May 30! It wasn't a super strong showing, but there were some things that I definitely felt good about from the show. I hope you're ready for a few announcements and updates, because we're into that season again! Time Mismanaged...     The showcase began with a CGI trailer for Concord , a new game from a new Sony developer called Firewalk Studio. The trailer here looked fun, and the characters were harmless (while being guilty of the Guardians of the Galaxy cheesiness that so many are annoyed by today), so I was hoping we had a fun sci-fi single player adventure on my hands, but then the trailer ended and transitioned into gameplay footage where the lead developer reported that, " Concord is a 5-v-5 Competitive First Person Shooter."
